Guy Bate has received a suggestion that he provide some pictures of diatoms to illustrate what they look like. The two pictures below were produced by Pat Smailes working at the the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University. Guy's team has found about 500+ species in the rivers and estuaries of RSA, so these two are just examples of a very diverse flora.

Some of the CERMers are currently conducting research at St Lucia and have sent the pictures below (to see a larger version of the picture click on the thumbnail; to get back to this page use your browser's "back" button).

Guy Bate slurping up diatoms from the surface of the sediment

Caroline Fox and Mark Olbers collecting sediment cores

Inspecting the sample. Diatoms from this sample will be identified and the assemblage characterised based on the relative abundance of the species present

The upper 1 cm of the core is collected. From this the chlorophyll is extracted into acetone and quantified to give a measure of photosynthetic activity
