Our Vision

To be one of the best Botany departments in South Africa. We aim to achieve this through high quality education and research relevant to local, regional and national needs, and through cooperation with leading researchers and educators both in South Africa and internationally.

Our Mission

To train students in the science of Botany, in order that they are equipped to engage meaningfully in any activity requiring botanical expertise.

At the undergraduate level this training aims to provide knowledge and a comprehensive appreciation of plants at the organism, community and ecosystem levels.

At postgraduate level, our objective involves maintaining a high level of scientific excellence in botanical research with specific emphasis on the role of plants in the structure and functioning of terrestrial and marine (including estuarine) communities and ecosystems.
